Is there a Cash for Clunkers scheme in New Zealand?
Not currently. The phrase “Cash for Clunkers” is commonly associated with vehicle-scrappage schemes. New Zealand’s Ministry of Transport ran vehicle scrappage trials in 2007 and 2009, offering incentives for vehicles nearing the end of their lives.
The Ministry says it is not currently planning any further scrappage trials.
So if you’re searching for “cash for clunkers NZ”, don’t assume there is a current government payment available for handing in an old vehicle.
When has an old car become a clunker?
There’s no official age, mileage or repair bill that turns a car into a clunker. Instead, look at the vehicle you actually have. It may be time to reassess it if:
- it has become unreliable or regularly needs attention
- a major mechanical problem has developed
- it is no longer roadworthy
- getting it back on the road would require significant work
- it has been sitting unused because you no longer want to repair
- it you simply no longer need the vehicle in its current condition
The key question isn’t “Is my car old?” It’s “Does keeping this particular car still make sense for me?”
Should you repair, sell or scrap a clunker?
That depends on the vehicle’s actual condition and what you want from it.
Consider repairing it if the car is otherwise useful to you and the work required makes sense for your situation.
Consider selling it as-is if you no longer want to spend more time or money on the vehicle. Get its condition assessed before assuming that an old or problem car has no value.
Consider a wrecker if the vehicle has reached the end of its usable life and is no longer suitable for the road.

Can you sell a clunker that does not run?
A non-running car does not automatically have to be treated the same way as an end-of-life scrap vehicle.

What paperwork matters when getting rid of an old car?
Whatever you call the vehicle clunker, old car or end-of-life vehicle, make sure the change is properly recorded. NZ Transport Agency says both the buyer and seller must notify it when a registered vehicle changes hands. A seller should let NZTA know when the vehicle has been sold or otherwise disposed of.
